The Right to the City is an exhibition and publishing project that brings together a series of artistic, theoretical and philosophical escape plans: real or imagined ways of reinventing life in our cities.

Exploring connections between art, architecture, philosophy and action, the project is inspired by David Harvey’s proclamation that “the freedom to make and remake our cities and ourselves is… one of the most precious yet most neglected of our human rights.”

Considering the environmental predicament the world is facing, together with greater urbanisation, many artists, architects, planners and activists are seeking ways to remake cities in a socially responsible and sustainable manner.

The Right to the City brings together written and artistic works that investigate urban interventions, providing a space in which the possibilities for re-imagining life in the city can be discussed.

The exhibition will be held at the Tin Sheds Gallery in Sydney, and a supporting publication – a special edition of Architectural Theory Review – will be produced in collaboration with the exhibition. A one-day symposium will also take place on Saturday 9 April. Margaret Crawford will present the keynote lecture at the symposium.
