Wilson Architects

Hamilton Wilson, Managing Director

"ArchiCAD aligns with the way architects think."

Overview

“Beginning as a specialist tool, ArchiCAD is now a fully integrated design and documentation tool for our practice of 40 people,” says Hamilton. “The decision to go with ArchiCAD 18 years ago has paid off. GRAPHISOFT had the sense that the value of the product was commensurate with research and development behind it. As software developers, they listen to their end users. They get valuable feedback from architects who want tools that give them a competitive edge.”Wilson Architects has won many prestigious commissions for the design of school, university and research facility projects, all of which necessitated close, ongoing collaboration with clients. Hamilton Wilson sees the importance of ArchiCAD in assisting him in the communication of concepts, forms and materials to clients.

Wilson Architects

Wilson Architects’ studio is emblematic of this Brisbane practice’s 21st century outlook that has evolved from a deep, proud heritage. Their modern studio is contained within a number of Federation-era workers’ cottages, yet it encompasses a striking one level space that encourages open communication and interaction.

Case Study Overview

“We use ArchiCAD from sketch to completion. It allows us to rigorously test and illustrate the intent of our design and documentation. It’s a highly productive digital prototyping tool, especially when we need to innovate to resolve challenges. In fact, we’ve gone to the next level with complete 3D documentation, modelling every component, saving us significant time in documentation and coordination.”Hamilton believes ArchiCAD’s Virtual Building Explorer tool makes it easy for Wilson Architects’ clients to visualise every stage of a building. This is especially useful in master planning, where clients can see ‘before’ and ‘after’ views. It also helps alleviate a client’s concerns about financial commitment and a building’s potential impact on a site. Just as importantly, collaborating consultants can better understand the implications and requirements of their contributions. “With VBE, consultants can explore the model with their staff back in their office. This really reduces any ‘lost in translation’ communications and speeds up the design process.”
