Architecture Collective

Sid Thoo Co-Director

“In some ways, EcoDesigner represents the holy grail of building performance software, because of its ability to perform integrated analysis within the BIM model itself.”

Overview

EcoDesigner, an ArchiCAD plug-in, provides architects with a fast, accurate way to analyse the energy efficiency performance of a building within an ArchiCAD BIM model. Only a working professional can give an unbiased view of EcoDesigner and the way it works within the ArchiCAD environment. One of the best credentialed people to do that is Sid Thoo, an architect and technologist who is passionate about energy efficiency and sustainability.

Case Study Overview

Architects can now quickly assess the energy economy of a building in a feasible and intuitive way. EcoDesigner enables energy efficiency valuations early in the design process. It calculates a building’s estimated yearly energy consumption and its carbon footprint index. The program takes into account a proposed building’s materials and location, climate, energy and other user-specified parameters.
"EcoDesigner has the potential to become a critical part of the BIM workflow for those using ArchiCAD,” says Sid. “The interface between ArchiCAD and EcoDesigner is seamless; the intuitive interface makes it quick and easy to enter the required material properties and operational data for the building in order to analyse building performance."
